johnl-oai c6e29b4fcb Migrate the Windows MXC sandbox to mxc-sdk (#55378)
## What changed

- Replace the separate MXC crates with `mxc-sdk` and adapt request construction to its policy and optional environment fields.
- Preserve the native availability probe by caching successful process security environment creation and startup attribute initialization without launching a process.
- Use the SDK's native denied-path support check and configure Bazel resource compilation for Windows GNU targets.

## Testing

Extend the request construction test to verify that nonempty environments use `Some` and empty environments use `None`.

Adam Perry @ OpenAI df8990e261 Upgrade zip to 9.0.0 and update plugin archive extraction (#54761)
## Why

Curated plugin archives should preserve executable permissions without applying setuid, setgid, or sticky bits.

## What changed

- Upgrade `zip` from 2.4.2 to 9.0.0, retaining the previous feature set and selecting the existing `bzip2-sys` backend explicitly. Update the Cargo and Bazel lockfiles.
- Adapt plugin extraction to fallible entry names and apply Unix permissions through the open output file, using the mode filtered by `zip`.

## Testing

Add a Unix regression test that encodes special permission bits directly in an archive entry and verifies that the extracted file has mode `0o755`.

Alex Zamoshchin b26b0a7a77 Prefer resource-specific scopes during MCP OAuth discovery (#54653)
## Why

Authorization server metadata can advertise scopes unrelated to the MCP resource. Using that list for discovery can request broader scopes than the resource requires.

## What changed

Update `rmcp` and use its initial scope selection during OAuth discovery: prefer scopes from the initial `WWW-Authenticate` challenge, fall back to protected resource metadata, and include `offline_access` when supported. Stop using the authorization server's general scope list as the discovered resource scopes.

## Testing

Add coverage for challenge scope precedence, resource metadata fallback, scope normalization, and exclusion of unrelated authorization server scopes. Add a no-browser login regression test for a preregistered client whose authorization server advertises neither scopes nor dynamic registration.

Sean Huang 6ae8b8aa7c Upgrade V8 to 152.2.0 and backport Array.sort safety guards (#54519)
## Why

Optimized `Array.prototype.sort` can write objects into incompatible array element storage when receiver element kinds differ and the comparator mutates the array.

## What changed

- Upgrade `v8` to `152.2.0`, the Bazel V8 source to `15.2.124.1`, and ICU data and initialization to version 78.
- Backport element-kind agreement checks for sort inlining in TurboFan and Maglev. Apply the patch to Bazel builds and Windows MSVC source builds, and include it in source-build cache keys and canary triggers.
- Refresh pinned sandbox archives and bindings, extend Bazel prebuilt coverage to musl Linux, and use matching sandbox bindings on Windows MSVC.
- Update Bazel integration patches and runtime dependencies for the new V8 release, and download the pinned Windows build tools in source-build workflows.

## Testing

Include the upstream sort regression test covering mixed element kinds, comparator mutation, and continued optimization for matching kinds. Add a test requiring canary and Windows source builds when the backport changes, and update artifact-fetch tests for the new version.

Dmitriy Kovalenko cd8d61b223 Upgrade Bazel's rules_python to 2.4.2 (#54087)
## What changed

- Upgrade `rules_python` from 1.7.0 to 2.4.2 and update `MODULE.bazel.lock`.
- Enable `--windows_enable_symlinks` in `.bazelrc`, as `rules_python` 2.x requires symlink support for Windows Python launchers.

ben zhang 815ef9bbc4 Fix cancellation of macOS user-verification prompts (#53790)
## Why

Keychain signing reconstructs its own authentication context, so invalidating the caller's context does not reliably cancel the context that owns the biometric prompt.

## What changed

Evaluate the stored key's access-control policy explicitly with `LAContext` before signing. On cancellation, invalidate that context and wait for its authorization callback before releasing the lifecycle lock, rejecting any late success. Reload the key with the authorized context and disable further interaction so signing cannot open another prompt.

## Testing

Update unit tests to cover waiting for cancellation completion and rejecting completed authorization after cancellation. Add an ignored macOS hardware test and setup instructions covering persisted Secure Enclave key reuse, signature verification, cancellation, retry signing, and cleanup.

jif cb7091b180 Preserve URLs and email addresses during external agent migration (#53706)
## Why

Rewriting source agent names and instruction filenames inside URLs and email addresses can change their destinations when importing external agent content.

## What changed

Use `linkify` to preserve recognized URLs and email addresses while rewriting surrounding text, including Markdown link labels and titles. Continue migrating instruction filename references to `AGENTS.md`, including relative links and references with line or column suffixes.

## Testing

Add rewrite coverage for URLs, email addresses, Markdown links, and surrounding Unicode text. Extend skill import and app-server configuration import tests to verify that link labels migrate while URL destinations remain unchanged.

alishobeiri-oai de8fab6d7a Upgrade rmcp to 3.5.1 and harden lifecycle tests (#52972)
## What changed

- Update the pinned `rmcp` dependency and Cargo/Bazel lockfiles, and migrate MCP handlers and fixtures to `ClientConfig` and `ServerConfig`.
- Stop requiring responses for cancelled elicitation requests in cancellation tests while retaining checks for cleanup and continued connection usability.
- Handle client disconnects during WebSocket writes in the TUI test server, use an asynchronous HTTP mock for loopback proxy testing, and improve remote executor test diagnostics and the Windows subprocess fixture.
- Use `invalid_prompt` for the memory worker failure fixture.

## Testing

Add a regression test covering transport EOF during both form elicitation and user verification. Keep the client alive while checking that pending response channels close, the timeout pause clears, and the service exits with `QuitReason::Closed`.

iceweasel-oai 4aa94dce27 Migrate the Windows MXC sandbox to split MXC crates (#52707)
## Why

PSEC API symbols can be present on transitional Windows builds where MXC is not enabled. Availability detection needs to verify that a native process security environment can actually be created.

## What changed

- Replace `mxc-sdk` with pinned `appcontainer_common`, `learning_mode_windows`, and `wxc_common` dependencies, and update Cargo and Bazel dependency metadata.
- Use MXC's cached create/close probe for `is_available()` and query native deny-path support through `SecurityEnvironmentApi` before launching requests with denied paths.
- Adapt request construction and the existing policy test to the vector-based environment field, and update the sandbox documentation.

jif 64335d1afd Upgrade hyper to 1.11.1 and test connection closure (#52608)
## Why

Requests with `Connection: close` must not reuse the connection even when the server responds with `Connection: keep-alive`.

## What changed

Update `hyper` from 1.8.1 to 1.11.1 in `codex-rs/Cargo.lock` and add the corresponding Bazel lockfile metadata.

## Testing

Add a regression test that sends two requests with `Connection: close` to a server that ignores the header and verifies that the second request uses a new connection.

iceweasel-oai 1c7c43cd85 Migrate the MXC sandbox to the 1.0.0 SDK (#51819)
## What changed

- Replace the separate MXC crates with the pinned `mxc-sdk` 1.0.0 dependency and update Cargo and Bazel lockfiles.
- Use the cached PSEC API-set check for availability and the SDK's native deny-path capability check before launch. Native creation and request-specific capabilities are validated at launch.
- Map empty environments to `None` to retain Windows user-profile defaults, while keeping nonempty environments explicit. Document the SDK's `SystemRoot` and `LOCALAPPDATA` requirements.
- Configure Bazel's LLVM resource compiler for Windows GNU builds, document Cargo's `RC_PATH` requirement, and add `libproc` and `libsandbox` to the macOS SDK libraries.

## Testing

Update the request-building test to verify that nonempty environments remain explicit and empty environments become `None`.

Benjamin Carlsson 447eac3b81 Decode Windows Terminal's mapped Shift+Enter sequence (#50720)
## Why

Windows Terminal's `sendInput` mapping delivers `ESC[13;2u` as individual console key events. Decode it as `Shift+Enter` so the mapping inserts a newline in the composer.

## What changed

- Wrap the Windows event stream with a decoder for the complete Escape-prefixed sequence, including interleaved key releases.
- Use a fixed 50 ms deadline for partial sequences and replay incomplete or mismatched input unchanged. Preserve literal text, paste events, and native key events.
- Update the `crossterm` revision and dependency lockfiles.

## Testing

Add tests for repeated and fragmented mappings, deadline handling, unchanged input, error and end-of-stream replay, and composer newline rendering with a snapshot.

michaelm-openai 7135b303d9 Upgrade age to 0.12.1 and remove the obsolete advisory exception (#50166)
## Why

Local secrets storage pulled in the unmaintained `proc-macro-error2` through `age` and `i18n-embed-fl`, requiring an exception for `RUSTSEC-2026-0173`.

## What changed

Upgrade `age` to `0.12.1` and update the Cargo and Bazel lockfiles. The updated dependency chain uses `proc-macro-error3`, allowing removal of the advisory exception from both `cargo-audit` and `cargo-deny` configuration.

- Adapt to the updated rustc and Clippy APIs, including resolving `Option::None` through type aliases when checking for uncommented arguments.
- Set the `chatgpt` crate's `recursion_limit` to `256`.

## Testing

Extend the UI fixture to expect an uncommented-argument warning for `OptionalString::None`, where `OptionalString` aliases `Option<String>`.

Dmitriy Kovalenko 3620b2caf8 Detect SQLite corruption during startup and preserve recovery backups (#49701)
## Why

A database can open successfully while containing corruption that startup previously missed. Detecting it before runtime initialization completes allows recoverable databases to be rebuilt while preserving the damaged files.

## What changed

- Run `PRAGMA quick_check(1)` when opening writable databases, with a 100 ms scan budget. Share attempts across cloned `SqliteConfig` instances by file identity so repeated opens skip validation and replacement files are checked again.
- Back up and rebuild runtime databases that support recovery. Report corruption without rebuilding thread history or other databases without an automatic recovery policy. Treat interrupted or locked checks as incomplete rather than confirmed corruption.
- Collect startup backups across recovery retries and include their locations in the app server warning. Explain that saved conversations can restore the thread list and history, while some database-only metadata may be unavailable.
- Record confirmed corruption in `codex.sqlite.corruption.count`.

## Testing

Add tests for recovery policies, backup preservation, validation caching and concurrency, cancelled and interrupted checks, and locked databases. Add app server coverage for recovery warnings and saved conversation restoration, a TUI warning snapshot, and message board post preservation.

Nick Steele c9b3924a62 Use the rmcp SDK for enterprise-managed token exchanges (#49473)
## What changed

Upgrade `rmcp` to a pinned Git revision of version `3.3.0` and enable `auth-enterprise-managed`. Delegate the two-stage ID-JAG exchange and token validation to the SDK, replacing the local implementation while retaining Codex HTTP routing and credential lifecycle policy.

Map SDK errors by exchange stage so `invalid_grant` distinguishes enterprise identity failures from resource authorization failures, and preserve handling of `insufficient_user_authentication`.

## Testing

Update exchange tests to verify rejection of unsupported `authorization_details` and malformed signed scopes. Exercise errors from both token endpoints to check credential policy, prevent credential reflection in diagnostics, and ensure rejected grants are not retried.

Felipe Coury 2925d06f5a Use native scrollback for Terminal.app over SSH in auto mode (#47417)
## What changed

- Detect Terminal.app from primary and secondary device attributes during startup on Unix SSH sessions without a detected multiplexer. Ignore signatures inside bracketed paste and leave incomplete replies unknown.
- Use inline mode when Terminal.app is detected and `tui.alternate_screen` is `auto`. Apply the decision before the first startup frame and retain it for later configuration loads. Preserve explicit `always`, `never`, and `--no-alt-screen` overrides.
- Update the `crossterm` dependency revision and lockfiles.

## Testing

Add coverage for terminal signatures, fragmented and pasted replies, probe completion and timeout behavior, screen-mode overrides, and an inline startup snapshot.

jif 293de27177 Add SQLite storage for local agent message boards (#46966)
## What changed

Add `LocalAgentMessageBoard` with persistent channels, posts, and subscriptions scoped by `SessionId`. Support channel creation, posting and replies, subscription changes, and bounded reads using Unicode character offsets.

Serialize mutations across independent handles with immediate transactions. Deduplicate retries by caller and request ID, reject changed requests that reuse an ID, and return existing post metadata without repeating notifications. Deliver deduplicated notifications after commit; notification failures leave committed posts successful and readable.

## Testing

Add integration tests covering concurrent retries across independent handles, reopening persisted boards, subscription routing, board isolation, Unicode reads, invalid recipients, inactive recipients, and notification failures.

richardopenai 2aff7208fe Add a hidden HTTP/3 TCP tunnel command (#45900)
## What changed

Add `codex tcp-tunnel` and the `codex-tcp-tunnel` crate to forward loopback TCP connections to an explicit target through a TLS-verified HTTP/3 CONNECT proxy.

- Require the proxy origin to match an approved HTTPS origin in a supplied policy file.
- Read bearer tokens and optional bounded, non-forwarding `x-` headers from stdin. Support token updates for new connections, `LISTENING` and `AUTH_UPDATED` notifications, and shutdown when the control pipe closes in token-update mode.
- Preserve the listener across proxy reconnects without replaying TCP streams, and let accepted streams continue while a proxy drains.

## Testing

Add tests for hidden CLI parsing, proxy and target validation, credential renewal, control-pipe closure, and invalid input without secret disclosure. A local HTTP/3 proxy test covers token replacement, transport recovery without stream replay, and graceful draining.

Benjamin Carlsson ce7fbb373b Bundle native voice runtimes in Windows releases (#44922)
## Why

Windows release packages need the voice helper and native audio libraries. Realtime TLS connections on fresh Windows installations also need platform certificate validation so Windows can retrieve missing trusted roots on demand.

## What changed

- Build and sign the voice helper and audio DLLs for Windows x64 and ARM64, bundle a pinned Microsoft CRT DLL, and verify signatures and runtime receipts before packaging.
- Add verified, pinned Cygwin and native build tools plus MSVC linker, compiler, and path handling fixes for the Windows Bazel builds.
- Include voice resources in primary release archives and WinGet packages. Preserve WinGet executable names, update manifest hashes, and recognize the package root through matching entrypoint metadata. Keep Python runtime wheels voice-free to preserve their existing Windows support floor.
- Use Windows platform TLS validation for realtime WebSockets when no custom CA bundle is configured, preserving custom CA behavior.

## Testing

Add coverage for build-input integrity and unsafe paths, signed Windows runtime assembly, WinGet file and hash preservation, package discovery, and TLS trust selection, untrusted certificate rejection, and hostname validation.

riley-oai e7637306bc Add macOS user verification with Secure Enclave signing (#43624)
## Why

The user-verification API previously returned an unsupported provider on macOS. Enable native verification using biometric-protected credentials.

## What changed

- Implement credential status, creation, reuse, deletion, and challenge signing with P-256 Secure Enclave keys in the Data Protection Keychain.
- Require biometric authentication through the key's access-control policy and use a fresh `LAContext` for each signature.
- Report Touch ID hardware support independently of enrollment and current readiness, and map native failures to structured verification errors.
- Serialize credential operations across processes with cancellable file-lock waits. Invalidate pending authentication on cancellation and wait for the signer to exit before releasing the lock.

## Testing

Add unit tests for lock contention and cancellation, authentication teardown and late-result rejection, native error classification, and validation of Secure Enclave key attributes.

Benjamin Carlsson a9896da3fe Connect voice-host RTP audio to speaker playback (#43248)
## Why

The voice host drained incoming RTP packets without playing them. Route received audio through decoding and speaker output while preserving speaker suppression boundaries.

## What changed

- Add a GStreamer pipeline with RTP jitter buffering, Opus decoding, conversion, and resampling into the native speaker sink.
- Rebuild playout when the speaker is re-enabled, reject packets received before the new pipeline started, and discard queued audio and echo references on speaker transitions while preserving capture history.
- Limit each receive pass to 64 packets so incoming media cannot indefinitely delay audio controls.
- Prevent retired sink failures from failing a new speaker generation, and retain the last coherent playback delay estimate during callback contention.

## Testing

Add tests for real Opus playback and stale packet rejection, combined microphone mute and speaker suppression, retired sink failures, delay contention, and echo-reference reset without losing capture history.

Benjamin Carlsson 9daf7d22ca Add bounded GStreamer playback components to the voice host (#43244)
## What changed

- Add a `GstAudioSink` subclass backed by a bounded mono `F32LE` playback writer, with partial writes, cancellation on speaker epoch changes, and delay accounting for queued samples and pending device output.
- Recreate the CPAL output stream and discard buffered audio when speaker controls change the epoch, preventing stale audio from surviving suppression.
- Add GStreamer dependencies, adjust Windows Bazel native-tool selection, and allow the helper handshake time to load startup-linked libraries.
- Separate installed-client tests from protocol lifecycle tests and supply native startup libraries in test packages.

## Testing

Add unit coverage for partial writes, sample accounting, suppression cancellation, stale writers, device delay, invalid samples, and stalled consumption.

Benjamin Carlsson 1c40ffe427 Add Windows MSVC Bazel targets for native voice libraries (#43144)
## What changed

- Add explicit x64 and ARM64 targets for native builds, runtime preparation, and linking using the existing voice recipes. Each target requires native Windows execution of the matching architecture.
- Declare compiler, SDK, Python, and CMake inputs; require an explicitly supplied Cygwin/pkgconf tool tree and a fixed `SystemRoot`. Validate installed tool selections against the manifest and declared files.
- Pair Windows DLLs with SDK import libraries, preserve plugin and receipt runfiles, and omit Unix runtime-search flags. Use Python for portable payload copying.
- Correct the MSVC ARM64 tool directory casing to `HostArm64` and document provisioning and build commands.

The generic Rust-consumer aliases remain separate; native Windows Bazel execution and consumer validation are still needed to establish complete Windows voice support.

## Testing

Add eight unit tests covering tool selection, path anchoring, invalid inputs, and DLL/import-library copying, plus x64 and ARM64 link smoke targets that reference `gst_version`.

## What changed

Patch `windows_support` to retain native MSVC tools and support files, plus the selected SDK's versioned tools, for `x64` and `arm64`. Expose them through opt-in `msvc_tools_x64`, `msvc_tools_arm64`, `winsdk_tools_x64`, and `winsdk_tools_arm64` directory targets.

Exclude the retained tool trees from the existing `sysroot_files`, `headers`, and `libs` targets.

Benjamin Carlsson e67a8ae6c9 Add explicit toolchain inputs for native voice builds (#43109)
## Why

Native voice builds ignore ambient compiler flags, but need a way to accept declared compiler, linker, and archive-tool inputs.

## What changed

- Add repeated `--c-flag`, `--cxx-flag`, and `--link-flag` options plus optional `--ar` and `--ranlib` paths for Unix builds. Record flags and pass them through CMake, Meson, and libffi, including Objective-C flags on macOS.
- Preserve literal libffi compiler arguments with response files. Reject flags containing whitespace, libffi paths requiring shell quoting, and Unix toolchain overrides on Windows.
- Add a pinned Bazel `pkg-config` tool built with LLVM archive tools and native macOS configure checks. Register the pinned Make toolchain and patch its bootstrap to pass preprocessor flags and enable cross-compilation configuration.

## Testing

Extend native-build tests to verify compiler and linker flags, explicit archive tools, Meson and Objective-C inputs, literal definitions through shell and recursive Make expansion, and rejection of unsupported overrides.

Benjamin Carlsson 7dc7c7a756 Send processed microphone audio over RTP in voice-host (#43090)
## Why

`voice-host` previously drained captured audio locally without sending it to the peer. Connect capture to the outgoing media track while preserving mute boundaries and limiting stale audio.

## What changed

- Resample capture and render references to 48 kHz with Rubato, apply Sonora echo cancellation, noise suppression, and gain control, and encode capture as 20 ms mono Opus packets.
- Attach an Opus track to the WebRTC peer and advance RTP timestamps across mute gaps without introducing sequence-number gaps.
- Prioritize queued controls and shutdown between sends. Clear pending audio and processing history on microphone mute transitions, reject delayed pre-unmute buffers, and reset partial history after capture gaps.
- Size bounded capture and render queues for device rates, validate callback timing, enforce a 500 ms processing deadline, and time out stalled sends after 100 ms.

Receive/decode and TUI integration remain unimplemented. The bundled Opus encoder build requires CMake and a C compiler.

## Testing

Add synthetic-audio tests for Opus decoding at 44.1 and 48 kHz input rates, echo reduction, capture gaps, stale audio, queue capacity, and control priority. A loopback WebRTC test verifies RTP delivery, decoded signal, mute isolation, and timestamp and sequence continuity across mute gaps.

Benjamin Carlsson 0683368584 Supply Bazel-managed CMake and Ninja for the bundled Opus build (#43083)
## Why

The bundled Opus encoder uses CMake and should not depend on tools available on a build worker's `PATH`.

## What changed

- Add `rules_foreign_cc` and provide its pinned CMake and Ninja tools and data to the `opusic-sys` build script.
- Add a CMake toolchain file that selects the declared Ninja executable, resolves the archiver path, and sets the target system and processor from `TARGET`, while retaining Bazel's compiler, SDK, and linker inputs.

Benjamin Carlsson 19b62211d9 Add opt-in local audio devices to the voice helper (#43079)
## What changed

- Add `openDevices` and `setAudioControls` to the helper protocol. Open the default microphone and speaker after runtime initialization and transport negotiation, initially muted and suppressed.
- Use CPAL on macOS, GNU Linux, and MSVC Windows, with native audio dependencies confined to `codex-voice-host`. Add ALSA development dependencies to Linux CI.
- Pack callback samples into preallocated, bounded queues and service devices every 5 ms. Reject incompatible callback configurations, invalidate queued audio on control transitions, and reject capture backlog after unmute using device timestamps.
- Handle recoverable stream underruns and overruns without terminating the helper; terminate on device failure, active audio queue overflow, or stale queued audio.

Device opening only establishes local device readiness. Capture and rendered audio references are drained locally; encoding, decoding, and peer audio are not connected by this change.

## Testing

Add unit tests for mute boundaries, stale playback invalidation, sample bounds, partial-block packing and timestamps, callback size and timing limits, startup silence, queue overflow, and recoverable stream errors.

Felipe Coury 7a8092a447 Preserve Markdown formatting when copying TUI responses (#42847)
## What changed

- Add rendered HTML alongside the original Markdown when copying a whole response through the native clipboard, so rich-text destinations preserve headings, lists, tables, code, and other formatting.
- Keep code-block, blockquote, transcript, terminal, and WSL clipboard copies as plain text.
- Escape raw HTML, omit remote image sources, and render unsupported link destinations as visible text when producing clipboard HTML.

## Testing

- Add coverage for rich formatting, local and unsafe links, inert images, fenced tables, copy selection formats, and clipboard fallbacks.

Benjamin Carlsson 1b53f6a44e Add WebRTC negotiation to the voice host (#42676)
## What changed

- Add helper protocol requests to create a WebRTC offer, apply an answer, and report readiness once the ordered `oai-events` data channel opens.
- Support UDP and TCP candidates while bounding signaling size, remote candidates, inbound TCP streams, and WebRTC buffers. Redact session descriptions and peer errors from diagnostics.
- Close unexpected remote data channels and tear down the peer during helper shutdown, including when the parent pipe is lost during startup.

## Testing

- Exercise offer/answer negotiation and clean shutdown over real UDP and TCP sockets.
- Cover signaling validation, candidate and connection limits, early packet loss, slow TCP connection setup, and blocked-startup parent loss.

jif 880f1135ea Scope MCP app resource reads to their originating call (#39187)
## Why

App widgets need to read resources using the app and account context of the
tool call that produced them, including after a thread is restored.

## What changed

- Add an optional `originCallId` to `mcpServer/resource/read` requests and
return it on successful scoped reads.
- Track bounded provenance for successful app tool calls in thread history and
use the current tool binding, account link, and app policy when reading the
  associated widget resource.
- Reject missing, mismatched, failed, or ambiguous origins, while keeping
app-only tools available for widget reads without exposing them to the model.

## Testing

Add app-server coverage for scoped widget reads across both history modes,
ephemeral and persistent threads, server restarts, app-only visibility, and
invalid origin cases.

Charlie Marsh 58d2daba45 Harden TUI startup input handling (#38641)
## Why

Terminal probes and other bootstrap work can leave keys or partial control
sequences buffered before an interactive startup screen is visible. Those
inputs must not accidentally select or confirm an action, while typeahead
intended for the composer should survive terminal initialization.

## What changed

- Replay user input consumed by Unix startup probes through Crossterm while
filtering completed terminal color replies, and avoid consuming the Windows
console input queue when detecting default colors.
- Drain decoded and unread input after rendering actionable startup screens,
including onboarding trust, migration, update, provider, resume, and hooks
prompts. Keep incomplete control sequences quarantined and fail closed when
an input boundary cannot be resolved.
- Restore terminal modes if initialization exits early and bound terminal probe
reads by time and byte limits.

## Testing

Add parser, boundary, onboarding, and PTY coverage for preserved typeahead,
split escape sequences, bracketed paste, delayed input, and fresh input after
an interactive screen becomes ready.
