fix(tui): clear completed safety buffering prompt (#30490)
## Why The safety-buffering prompt is a modal TUI view, but the normal successful-turn path only hid the running status indicator. If the turn completed while the prompt was open, the stale modal remained over the composer until the user dismissed it or another turn started. This aligns the TUI with the app behavior: keep the safety notice visible while the turn is active, then remove it when the turn becomes terminal. It also prevents the stale retry action from changing the model and reasoning effort for a future turn after the buffered turn has already completed. | New copy | |---| | <img width="1014" height="313" alt="CleanShot 2026-06-28 at 20 27 18" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f0f37359-5d77-442f-add2-9d1874bdc422" /> | ## What changed - Clear the active safety-buffering view and retry state when a turn completes successfully. - Update the retry-capable message to say “Hang tight or retry with a faster model”. - Extend the safety-buffering regression coverage to verify that the prompt remains visible after assistant output starts and disappears when the turn completes. - Update the TUI snapshot for the revised copy. This is a follow-up to #29919. ## How to Test 1. Start a TUI turn that receives `model/safetyBuffering/updated` with `showBufferingUi: true` and a `fasterModel`. 2. Confirm the prompt says “Hang tight or retry with a faster model”. 3. Let the turn continue and confirm the prompt remains visible while the turn is active. 4. Let the turn finish successfully and confirm the prompt disappears and the composer is restored without requiring an extra keypress. 5. Confirm a buffering update without a faster model still shows the shorter non-retry message. Targeted automated coverage: - `just test -p codex-tui safety_buffering` — 4 passed. - `just test -p codex-tui` — 2,951 passed; two unrelated Guardian feature-flag tests failed identically on `main` in this environment. The argument-comment lint was also audited manually. The workspace Bazel invocation was blocked by a missing external LLVM `compiler-rt` BUILD file, and the packaged per-crate fallback uses a nightly older than the current `sqlx` minimum Rust version. |

[codex] Support npm marketplace plugin sources (#29375)
## Why
Marketplace source deserialization treated `{"source":"npm", ...}` as
unsupported. The loader logged and skipped the entry, so npm-backed
plugins never appeared in `plugin list --available` and `plugin add`
returned "plugin not found".
Codex plugins are installed from a plugin root, not from an npm
dependency tree. For npm-backed marketplace entries, Codex should fetch
the published package contents without running package scripts or
installing unrelated dependencies.
## What changed
- Add `npm` marketplace plugin sources with `package`, optional semver
`version` or version range, and optional HTTPS `registry`.
- Reject unsafe npm source fields before materialization, including
invalid package names, non-semver version selectors, plaintext or
credential-bearing registry URLs, and registry query/fragment data.
- Materialize npm plugins with `npm pack --ignore-scripts`, then unpack
the resulting tarball through the existing hardened plugin bundle
extractor.
- Enforce npm archive and extracted-size limits, require the standard
npm `package/` archive root, and verify the extracted `package.json`
name matches the requested package before installing.
- Keep plugin listings, install-source descriptions, CLI JSON/human
output, app-server v2 `PluginSource`, TUI source summaries, regenerated
schema fixtures, and app-server documentation in sync.
## Impact
Marketplaces can distribute Codex plugins from public or configured
private HTTPS npm registries using the same install flow as existing
materialized plugin sources. `npm` must be available on `PATH` when an
npm-backed plugin is installed.
Fixes #27831
## Validation
- `just write-app-server-schema`
- `just test -p codex-core-plugins -p codex-app-server-protocol -p
codex-app-server -p codex-cli`
- npm/schema/core-plugin coverage passed in the run.
- The full focused command finished with `1739 passed`, `11 failed`, and
`6 timed out`; the failures were unrelated local app-server environment
failures from `sandbox-exec: sandbox_apply: Operation not permitted`
plus one missing `test_stdio_server` helper binary.
- Installed an npm-published Codex plugin package through a throwaway
local marketplace and throwaway `CODEX_HOME` to exercise the real npm
materialization path end to end.

TUI Plugin Sharing 5 - polish remote plugin catalog rows (#26705)
This is the final plugin sharing PR in the 5-PR stack. It applies the remaining TUI polish for remote plugin catalog rows and tabs: admin-disabled plugins now read as blocked/view-only instead of looking toggleable, admin-installed/default-installed plugins count and sort like installed plugins, plugin search matches richer metadata, and an empty successful `Shared with me` section stays hidden. - Admin-disabled rows use a blocked marker, show `Disabled`, and keep Enter-only detail behavior without a toggle hint. - Admin-installed/default-installed plugins show as installed in counts, ordering, tabs, and detail copy. - Plugin search now matches descriptions and keywords in addition to existing row metadata. - Successful-empty `Shared with me` tabs are hidden, while loading, error, workspace-empty, and real shared-plugin states remain visible. - Updates coverage in `plugins_popup_snapshot_shows_all_marketplaces_and_sorts_installed_then_name`, `plugins_popup_admin_disabled_installed_plugin_has_no_toggle_hint`, `plugins_popup_search_matches_plugin_descriptions`, and `plugins_popup_remote_section_fallback_states_snapshot`. - Updates snapshots `plugins_popup_curated_marketplace` and `plugins_popup_empty_shared_section_hidden`. <img width="2034" height="106" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/3f9a57e1-edd8-4e6c-b0b0-9f632a3c9529" /> <img width="2038" height="380" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/45a47491-3381-4846-a13d-496bc0051d42" /> |

core: resolve view_image paths in selected environment (#29526)
## Why view_image needs to support foreign OS remote executors. ## What - resolve image paths against the selected environment as `PathUri` and read them through that environment's filesystem - keep app-server's public path field wire-compatible as `LegacyAppPathString`, with purpose-specific UI rendering - cover relative and absolute target-native paths in the core integration test and run the full `view_image` suite under wine-exec without skips |

TUI Plugin Sharing 4 - cover remote plugin catalog flows (#26704)
Remote plugin catalogs now span workspace, shared, and local sources, so their TUI behavior needs focused regression coverage across loading, navigation, actions, and refreshes. This PR: - Covers product labels and rendered loading/error states for Workspace, Shared with me, Shared with me (link), and Local tabs, including tab persistence across refresh and detail navigation. - Covers remote/local deduplication, Installed-tab remote detail routing, marketplace load-error handling, and disabled install/uninstall navigation. - Adds a full detail snapshot for local shared-plugin metadata plus focused snapshots for marketplace labels and admin-disabled status. - Verifies shared plugins remain eligible for mentions and successful uninstalls trigger a catalog refresh. |

permission profiles: expose availability to clients (#26678)
## Why `permissionProfile/list` currently advertises every built-in and configured profile even when effective enterprise requirements prevent selecting it. That forces each client to reconstruct policy from lower-level requirement fields, which is easy to miss and difficult to keep consistent. The catalog should remain complete so clients can explain that an option was disabled by an administrator, while also reporting whether each profile is selectable. ## What - Add an `allowed` field to each permission profile summary. - Build a shared catalog from the effective config and current requirements, including `allowed_sandbox_modes`, `allowed_permissions`, and filesystem restrictions. - Use the shared catalog in app-server and the TUI so disallowed profiles remain visible but cannot be selected. - Use the canonical `:danger-full-access` profile ID in the TUI. - Update the app-server schemas, API documentation, behavioral tests, and TUI snapshots. ## Scope This PR targets `main` directly and is independent of #24852. It preserves the current behavior where built-in profiles are constrained by sandbox-mode requirements and `allowed_permissions` applies to configured profiles. ## Testing - `just test -p codex-core permission_profile_catalog_marks_profiles_disallowed_by_requirements` - `just test -p codex-app-server permission_profile_list` - `just test -p codex-app-server-protocol` - `just test -p codex-tui profile_permissions` - `just fix -p codex-core` - `just fix -p codex-app-server-protocol` - `just fix -p codex-app-server` - `just fix -p codex-tui` - `just fmt` --------- Co-authored-by: Codex <noreply@openai.com> Co-authored-by: Joey Trasatti <joey.trasatti@openai.com> |

[codex] Fix usage-limit reset copy and state (#28793)
## Why The reset flow introduced in #28154 still describes earned reset credits as "rate-limit resets" and uses generic reset-scope copy. It can also retain a stale available-credit count after redemption or an account change, leaving the reset action enabled after the last credit is used. This follow-up updates terminology only within that reset feature. Existing rate-limit wording elsewhere in the CLI and TUI is unchanged. ## What changed - Rename reset-specific `/usage` menu items, startup hints, and reset dialogs to "usage limit reset." - Describe monthly resets for Free, Go, and accounts that report a monthly usage window; otherwise describe the current 5-hour and weekly limits. - Recheck a cached zero balance when `/usage` is reopened, and refresh the balance after redemption so the final reset immediately disables the action. - Correlate async refresh results before updating snapshots and clear account-derived reset state, warnings, prompts, and status surfaces when the account changes. ## Validation - `just test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::usage` — 29 passed. - `just test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::status_command_tests` — 7 passed. - Account-boundary prompt and plan-mode prompt regression tests passed. - `cargo insta pending-snapshots` from `codex-rs/tui` — no pending snapshots.\ <img width="814" height="318" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/2a460e96-458b-4805-8d9f-c759382d21a4" /> view for monthly <img width="905" height="243" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/179f88e3-08fb-4af5-8dc6-ce6a944ed681" /> |

TUI Plugin Sharing 3 - render remote plugin catalog sections (#26703)
## Summary [#26701](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/26701) added remote plugin identity support, [#26702](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/26702) added remote-section fetching and state, and [#28768](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28768) extracted the catalog rendering module. This PR builds the product-facing `/plugins` catalog on that foundation so remote records appear as OpenAI Curated, Workspace, and Shared with me sections rather than backend marketplace implementation details. Plugin details remain read-only for sharing metadata. This PR does not add share-authoring actions or change the app-server protocol. ## Changes - Renders OpenAI Curated, Workspace, and Shared with me sections with loading, empty, and error states. - Preserves section selection and stable tab ordering as remote sections transition between fallback and populated states. - Shows OpenAI Curated loading only when the explicit vertical fallback request was issued. - Centralizes remote marketplace identity matching around the existing marketplace constants. - Uses product labels for remote marketplaces and identifies the personal marketplace as Local by its path. - Shows read-only source, authentication, version, and sharing metadata in plugin detail views. - Applies narrow display deduplication for local and remote records sharing a remote plugin ID: - installed records take precedence; - local mapped sources are preferred for details only when their installed state matches the selected record. - Returns from detail and confirmation views through the current plugin cache so newly loaded remote sections are not overwritten by an older captured response. - Keeps admin-disabled plugins view-only and labels default-installed plugins as Available by default. ## Tests New tests: - `plugins_popup_admin_disabled_available_plugin_has_view_only_hint` - `plugins_popup_remote_section_fallback_states_snapshot` - `plugins_popup_installed_remote_row_keeps_remote_detail_when_local_share_is_uninstalled` Updated existing plugin catalog tests and snapshots for product labels, detail metadata, personal-marketplace labeling, and stable tab ordering. Verification: - `cargo clippy -p codex-tui --all-targets -- -D warnings` ## Follow-ups - Local/remote duplicate normalization should eventually move into app-server. This PR intentionally keeps the compatibility behavior narrow and display-only. - PR5 will sanitize sensitive components before displaying Git source URLs. |

Allow resume and settings commands during tasks and MCP startup (#29154)
## Why The TUI treats both an active turn and MCP startup as a running task. That currently blocks `/resume` and several settings commands even though they do not compete with turn execution, which is especially frustrating when MCP startup is slow. Model, permissions, personality, and service-tier selections already update thread settings independently of the running turn. Other clients can send those updates mid-turn, while the current turn continues with its captured settings. Allowing the same updates from local slash commands makes the TUI consistent with that existing behavior. ## What changed - Allow `/resume` while a task is running. - Allow `/model`, `/permissions`, `/personality`, and service-tier commands such as `/fast` while a task is running. - Keep the existing behavior where the active turn uses its captured settings and updates apply to subsequent turns. - Exercise the commands under the busy state in the existing TUI tests and retain coverage for commands that should remain blocked. ## Behavior note Turn settings such as model selection and reasoning effort are captured when a turn starts. Changing them during an active turn affects the next turn, not the turn already in progress. The status bar updates immediately, so it may temporarily display the newly selected setting before that setting is actually in effect. ## Verification - Focused `codex-tui` tests for resume dispatch, settings popups, `/fast`, and disabled-command behavior. ## Related issues Closes #19015. Addresses the next-turn-safe model/reasoning switching portion of #14356; dedicated shortcuts and the proposed depth meter remain out of scope. |

Pause active goals before TUI interrupts (#28813)
Fixes #28104. ## Summary Active `/goal` turns should leave the persisted goal paused whenever the TUI interrupts the running turn. The bug in #28104 showed this most visibly through `Esc`: some interrupt paths aborted the turn without updating the goal status, so the goal could remain active and continue automatically. This change makes `ChatWidget` pause an active goal before the TUI sends an interrupt from the status-row path, the pending-steer path, `Ctrl+C`, or a request-user-input overlay. The modal overlay now reports whether a key will interrupt the turn, which keeps modal `Esc` and `Ctrl+C` behavior aligned with the normal interrupt paths. ## Manual Testing Built the local CLI with `just codex --help`, then launched the local TUI with goals enabled. Started an active `/goal` turn and interrupted it with `Esc`, then resumed and repeated with `Ctrl+C`; both paths showed `Goal paused`, the interrupted-conversation message, and the `Goal paused (/goal resume)` footer. I also stopped the background terminal and exited the TUI cleanly after the run. I did not find a reliable standalone manual path to force the request-user-input overlay case, so that path is covered by the focused automated test. |

feat(tui): add rate-limit reset redemption to /usage (#28154)
## Why Codex users can earn personal rate-limit reset credits, but the CLI does not currently provide a way to view or redeem them. The `/usage` command restored in #27925 is intended to be the entry point for usage-related actions, so reset redemption belongs there rather than in a separate dashed slash command. Depends on #28143 for the app-server and backend-client reset-credit APIs. ## What changed - Turn bare `/usage` into a menu with entries for token activity and earned rate-limit resets while preserving `/usage daily`, `/usage weekly`, and `/usage cumulative`. - Add loading, empty, confirmation, success, retry, and error states with a caller-generated UUID idempotency key reused across retries of the same logical reset. - Show an availability hint only for backend-classified rate-limit errors with credits available. - Hide the reset entry for workspace accounts. ## Validation - `just test -p codex-tui chatwidget::tests::usage` — 19 passed. - `just fix -p codex-tui` — passed. - `just fmt` — passed. - `cargo insta pending-snapshots` from `codex-rs/tui` — no pending snapshots. ## Examples <img width="1168" height="304" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/caa4c1e3-e996-494d-ae17-50b521f5dce8" /> <img width="908" height="260" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/e38a726b-77cc-4bd0-9ea8-9f3ad21c5768" /> ### Reset flow <img width="1509" height="312" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d987013c-78a5-48a2-ad8d-c61ad267a327" /> <img width="585" height="190" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/de32be19-79b9-4a3e-8574-6f1c208c98ae" /> <img width="600" height="210" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/88a165cf-796d-4fdc-a7bc-ea89917573da" /> <img width="512" height="193" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d2353998-5aa8-442e-a5f8-3a8a5b832753" /> |

feat(tui): reland token activity command (#27925)
## Why [#25345](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/25345) was approved, green, and squash-merged into its stacked base branch, `fcoury/tokenmaxxing-api`. Four minutes later, that base branch was force-pushed back to an API-only rebased head while preparing [#25344](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/25344) for `main`. As a result, the squash commit from #25345 was orphaned and the TUI command never reached `main` or a release. This PR relands the orphaned TUI change from [`411410b8`](https://github.com/openai/codex/commit/411410b85c2d8eb050d441f17396c5c4048d866f) on current `main`. ## What changed - Add `/usage`, `/usage daily`, `/usage weekly`, and `/usage cumulative` for account token activity. - Fetch account usage asynchronously through the existing `account/usage/read` app-server RPC. - Render daily, weekly, and cumulative activity with theme-aware terminal palettes and bounded transient cards. - Preserve transcript ordering while assistant streams, history consolidations, active cells, and hooks complete. - Hide `/usage` from completion when backend auth is unavailable while keeping typed-command guidance. - Carry current-main behavior forward for cwd-aware Markdown parsing, Windows Terminal color detection, and personal access token auth. - Clear pending usage cards on thread rollback and delay completed cards until live hook output is committed. - Add focused regression and snapshot coverage for loading, auth errors, invalid views, rollback, hook ordering, layout, and charts. ## Prior review The original implementation was approved by Eric Traut in #25345 after testing multiple themes and light/dark terminals. This PR preserves that reviewed implementation while adapting it to current `main` and adding regression coverage for newer rollback and hook lifecycle behavior. ## Validation - `just test -p codex-tui token_activity palette renderable usage_command` — 37 passed. - Focused rollback, hook-ordering, and error snapshot tests — 4 passed. - `just fix -p codex-tui` — passed. - `UV_CACHE_DIR=/private/tmp/codex-uv-cache just fmt` — passed. - `cargo insta pending-snapshots` — no pending snapshots. - `just test -p codex-tui` — 2,870 passed; two unrelated guardian feature-flag tests failed because their expected `OverrideTurnContext` event was absent: - `update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_manual_review_policy_without_history` - `update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_review_policy_and_restores_default` - `just argument-comment-lint` could not complete because the local Bazel LLVM `compiler-rt` repository is missing `include/sanitizer/*.h`. The touched Rust diff was manually inspected and no missing opaque-literal argument comments were found. |

Promote TUI unified mentions in composer to default mentions feature (#27499)
## Summary This PR promotes Mentions 2.0 (unified TUI mention popup) to stable and enables it by default. - Keep `mentions_v2` as a temporary rollback path to the legacy split popups (`--disable mentions_v2`). - Add feature-default and snapshot coverage for the default experience. ## Prior work - [#19068 — Unified mentions in TUI](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19068) - [#22375 — Use plugin/list to get plugins for mentions](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22375) - [#23363 — Unified mentions tweaks and rendering polish](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/23363) ## Test plan - Launch Codex without any feature overrides. - Type `@` in the TUI composer. - Confirm the unified mentions menu opens and displays filesystem, plugin, and skill results. |

tui: clear stale hook row after turn completion (#27619)
Fixes #27210. ## Why When the app server reports a visible `HookStarted` event for a `PostToolUse` hook but the turn reaches `TurnCompleted` before a matching hook completion event arrives, the TUI can leave the transient `Running PostToolUse hook` row visible after the agent is done. Interrupted and failed turn cleanup already drops transient live hook rows; the normal completion path did not. ## What Changed - Added `ChatWidget::clear_active_hook_cell()` for dropping transient live hook status without writing it to history. - Call that cleanup from normal task completion, while reusing it for the existing start/finalize cleanup paths. - Added `completed_turn_clears_visible_running_hook` snapshot coverage for the reported `PostToolUse` case. ## Tests - `just test -p codex-tui completed_turn_clears_visible_running_hook` - `just test -p codex-tui` (fails on current `main` in unrelated guardian tests: `update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_review_policy_and_restores_default` and `update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_clears_manual_review_policy_without_history`) |

Add session delete commands in CLI and TUI (#27476)
## Summary The app server exposes `thread/delete`, but users cannot invoke it from the CLI or TUI. Because deletion is irreversible, the user-facing commands need deliberate confirmation and safer handling of name-based targets. - Add `codex delete <SESSION>` with interactive confirmation, restricting `--force` to UUID targets. - Resolve exact names across active and archived sessions, including renamed sessions, and validate prompted UUID targets before confirmation. - Add a `/delete` command with a confirmation popup that warns the current session and its subagent threads will be permanently deleted. ## Manual testing - Deleted by UUID with `--force` and verified the rollout, session-index entry, and database row were removed. - Exercised name-based confirmation for both cancellation and affirmative deletion; cancellation preserved the session and confirmation removed it. - Verified deletion refuses to proceed without `--force`, while `--force` rejects names, including duplicate names. - Verified duplicate-name confirmation displays the concrete UUID selected. - Deleted an archived session by name. - Verified an already-missing UUID fails before displaying a confirmation prompt. - Exercised `/delete` in the TUI: the popup defaults to No, cancellation preserves the session, and confirmation deletes the session and exits. - Verified that `codex delete` works for both archived and non-archived sessions. |

fix: Prevent /review crash when entering Esc on steer message (#22879)
This changes the `/review` escape path so `Esc` no longer behaves like the normal queued-follow-up interrupt flow while a review is running. Steering is not currently supported in `/review` mode, without this change users are able to attempt a steer but it leads to a crash (see #22815). If the user has already tried to send additional guidance during `/review`, the TUI now keeps the review running and shows a warning that steer messages are not supported in that mode, while still pointing users to `Ctrl+C` if they actually want to cancel. It also adds regression coverage for the review-specific warning behavior. When users do cancel with Ctrl+C during /review, the TUI now tolerates the active-turn race that can happen during review handoff, and any queued steer messages are restored to the composer instead of being discarded. - Special-case `Esc` during an active `/review` when follow-up steer input is pending or has already been deferred. - Show a clear warning instead of interrupting the running review. - Make the Ctrl+C cancel path during /review resilient to active-turn races, while preserving any queued steer text by restoring it to the composer. - Add review-mode test coverage for the warning path. ## Testing 1. Start a `/review` with a diff large enough that the review stays active for more than a few seconds. 2. While the review is still running, type a follow-up / steer message, submit it, and then press `Esc`. Before: `Esc` causes the TUI to close abruptly. After: the review keeps running and the transcript shows a warning that steer messages are not supported during `/review`, with guidance to use `Ctrl+C` if you want to cancel. 3. Press `Ctrl+C` if you actually want to stop the review. Before: (after restarting the test since Pt. 2 crashed) this is the intentional cancellation path. After: this remains the intentional cancellation path, and any queued follow-up steer text is restored to the composer instead of being lost. ## Note: `/review` mode explicitly does not support steering at this time (as noted in `turn_processer.rs`, if we want to explore that in the future this code will need to be modified). This change keeps unsupported steer attempts from crashing the TUI and preserves queued follow-up text if the user cancels with Ctrl+C. |

Surface TUI config write error causes (#26537)
## Summary TUI config writes currently wrap app-server failures with local context like `config/batchWrite failed in TUI`, but several user-visible paths only render the outer error. That hides the actionable app-server message, such as validation constraints or read-only `CODEX_HOME` failures, leaving users with a dead-end diagnostic. This change adds a small formatter next to the TUI config write helpers that renders the error source chain, then uses it for model persistence, feature persistence, project trust, status line writes, hook trust, and hook enablement. [codex] Use model-advertised reasoning effort order (#26446)
## Summary - preserve the model catalog order for app-server `supportedReasoningEfforts` and document that client contract - render TUI reasoning choices in the advertised order - step reasoning shortcuts by adjacent list position instead of deriving order from known effort names - anchor unsupported configured values to the advertised default, or the first option when needed - remove canonical effort ordering helpers and the unused upgrade effort mapping ## Validation - `just fmt` - Local tests and compilation were not run per request; relying on CI. Stacked on #26444. |

[codex] Support model-defined reasoning efforts (#26444)
## Summary - accept non-empty model-defined reasoning effort values while preserving built-in effort behavior - propagate the non-Copy effort type through core, app-server, TUI, telemetry, and persistence call sites - preserve string wire encoding and expose an open-string schema for clients - update model selection and shortcut behavior for model-advertised effort values ## Root cause `ReasoningEffort` gained a string-backed custom variant, so it could no longer implement `Copy` or rely on derived closed-enum serialization. Existing consumers still moved effort values from shared references and assumed a fixed built-in value set. ## Validation - `just fmt` - Local tests and compilation were not run per request; relying on CI. |

Add reasoning-only status surface item (#25504)
Closes #24886. ## Why Users can configure the TUI status line and terminal title with `model-with-reasoning`, but issue #24886 asks for a compact reasoning-only item. That lets a setup show just `default`, `low`, `medium`, `high`, or `xhigh` without repeating the model name. ## What changed - Added a `reasoning` item for `/statusline` and `/title` setup flows. - Rendered the item from the effective reasoning effort, including collaboration-mode overrides. - Registered `reasoning` with `codex doctor` so Codex-generated terminal-title config is not reported as invalid. - Updated TUI setup snapshots so the picker previews include the new item. |

Constrain Windows sandbox requirements (#23766)
# Why Managed requirements can already constrain sandbox policy choices, but Windows sandbox implementation selection was still resolved independently from those requirements. That left the TUI able to continue through the unelevated fallback even when an organization wants to require the elevated Windows sandbox implementation. # What - Add `[windows].allowed_sandbox_implementations` requirements support for the Windows `elevated` and `unelevated` implementations. - Apply that allowlist during core config resolution so disallowed configured or feature-selected Windows sandbox implementations fall back to an allowed implementation with the existing requirements warning path. - Reuse the existing TUI Windows setup prompts to block disallowed unelevated continuation, keep required elevated setup in front of the user, and refuse to persist a TUI-selected Windows sandbox mode that requirements disallow. # Semantics | Allowed | Selected | Effective | | --- | --- | --- | | `["elevated"]` | `unelevated` / unset | `elevated` | | `["unelevated"]` | `elevated` / unset | `unelevated` | | `["elevated", "unelevated"]` | `elevated` | `elevated` | | `["elevated", "unelevated"]` | `unelevated` | `unelevated` | | `["elevated", "unelevated"]` | unset | `elevated` | Availability is handled by interactive setup surfaces after allowlist resolution. If the effective elevated implementation is not ready, elevated-only requirements block on setup. When unelevated is also allowed, the UI may offer the existing unelevated fallback. ## TUI Screens If elevated setup is not already complete: ``` Your organization requires the default Codex agent sandbox to continue. Set it up to protect your files and control network access. Learn more <https://developers.openai.com/codex/windows> › 1. Set up default sandbox (requires Administrator permissions) 2. Quit ``` If admin setup fails under `["elevated"]`: ``` Couldn't set up your sandbox with Administrator permissions Your organization requires the default sandbox before Codex can continue. Learn more <https://developers.openai.com/codex/windows> › 1. Try setting up admin sandbox again 2. Quit ``` # Next Steps - extend the requirements/readout surface, such as `configRequirements/read`, so clients can inspect the loaded `[windows].allowed_sandbox_implementations` requirement instead of inferring it from Windows setup state - consider extending `windowsSandbox/readiness` as well - update the App startup guide, setup flow, and banner surfaces so an elevated-only requirement omits any continue-unelevated escape hatch and blocks startup until a permitted implementation is ready; - preserve the existing unelevated fallback path when requirements allow it, including the `["unelevated"]` case where elevated is disallowed |

Use session wording in /rename confirmation (#25035)
## Why The TUI `/rename` confirmation should use the term "session" for consistency. |

|

Add /archive slash command (#25027)
## Why TUI users can archive saved sessions from other surfaces, but there is no in-session command for archiving the active session. Since archiving the active session also exits the TUI, the command should ask for explicit confirmation instead of firing immediately. I'm also working on [a companion PR](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/25021) that adds `codex archive` and `codex unarchive` top-level CLI commands. ## What changed - Adds a new `/archive` slash command described as `archive this session and exit`. - Shows a confirmation dialog with `No, don't archive` selected first and `Yes, archive and exit` as the explicit action. - On confirmation, calls the existing `thread/archive` app-server RPC for the active main session and exits after success. - Keeps `/archive` disabled while a task is running and unavailable in side conversations. ## Verification Added focused TUI coverage for the `/archive` confirmation flow, disabled-while-task-running behavior, and the `/ar` slash-command popup snapshot. |

Align TUI permissions labels with app (#25017)
## Summary The desktop app now presents the on-request permissions mode as `Ask for approval` and the manual-review-backed mode as `Approve for me`. The TUI still exposed older/internal labels like `Default` and `Auto-review`, which made the same underlying settings look different across clients. This updates the TUI UX copy to match the app without changing the underlying default behavior. Fresh threads continue to use the existing on-request approval mode, now displayed as `Ask for approval`. The label changes cover `/permissions`, explicit profile permissions menus, status surfaces, config persistence history/error text, and the corresponding TUI snapshots. ### Before <img width="1181" height="119" alt="Screenshot 2026-05-28 at 10 19 47 PM" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0664846b-b6dd-4931-b4dd-d0af0d42058e" /> <img width="523" height="19" alt="Screenshot 2026-05-28 at 10 21 29 PM" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/7899c33e-b35d-4684-8389-97e357803423" /> ### After <img width="1216" height="117" alt="Screenshot 2026-05-28 at 10 19 32 PM" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/015aab43-ac97-411f-8031-75cdd887251b" /> <img width="567" height="18" alt="Screenshot 2026-05-28 at 10 20 24 PM" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/28b6422c-b823-4298-b221-c83d46d09d66" /> |

Render multiline hook output in TUI (#24965)
# Why Fixes #24529. Completed hook output in the TUI rendered each `HookOutputEntry` as one ratatui line, so explicit newlines inside hook output were not shown as separate transcript rows. That made multiline `SessionStart.additionalContext` hard to inspect even though the model-facing context path preserved the original text. # What - Split completed hook output entries on explicit newlines before rendering them in `codex-rs/tui/src/history_cell/hook_cell.rs`. - Keep the hook output prefix, such as `hook context:` or `warning:`, on the first physical line only. - Preserve explicit blank lines and render continuation lines with the hook body indent. - Add unit coverage for multiline context and warning output, plus a chatwidget snapshot regression for `SessionStart` history output. # Testing - `cargo nextest run -p codex-tui completed_hook_multiline hook_completed_before_reveal_renders_completed_without_running_flash` - `just argument-comment-lint -p codex-tui -- --ignore-rust-version --lib --tests` |

Attach Windows sandbox log to feedback reports (#24623)
## Why Windows sandbox diagnostics are currently hard to recover from `/feedback` even though they are often the most useful artifact when debugging sandbox behavior. Now that sandbox logging uses daily rolling files, feedback can safely include the current day's sandbox log without uploading the old ever-growing legacy `sandbox.log`. ## What changed - Add a `codex-windows-sandbox` helper that resolves the current daily sandbox log from `codex_home`. - When feedback is submitted with logs enabled on Windows, app-server attaches today's sandbox log if it exists. - Upload the attachment under the stable filename `windows-sandbox.log`, independent of the dated on-disk filename. - Keep existing raw `extra_log_files` behavior unchanged for rollout and desktop log attachments. ## Verification - `cargo fmt -p codex-app-server -p codex-windows-sandbox` - `cargo test -p codex-windows-sandbox current_log_file_path_for_codex_home_uses_sandbox_dir` - `cargo test -p codex-app-server windows_sandbox_log_attachment_uses_current_log` - Manual CLI/TUI `/feedback` test confirmed Sentry received `windows-sandbox.log`. |

tui: add named permission profile picker (#21559)
## Why Users who opt into named permission profiles through `default_permissions` or `[permissions.*]` should stay in named-profile semantics when they open `/permissions`. The legacy picker rewrites those users into anonymous preset state, which loses the active profile identity and hides custom configured profiles. ## What changed - Switch `/permissions` to a profile-aware picker when profile mode is active. - Show friendly built-in labels instead of raw `:` profile syntax. - Include configured custom profiles and their descriptions in the picker. - Route selections through the split TUI profile-selection flow below this PR. - Add TUI snapshots and regression coverage for built-ins, custom profiles, and conflicting legacy runtime overrides. ## Stack 1. [#22931](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22931): runtime/session/network propagation for active permission profiles. 2. [#23708](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/23708): TUI selection plumbing and guardrail flow. 3. **This PR**: profile-aware `/permissions` menu and custom profile display. ## UX impact In profile mode, `/permissions` shows the same human-facing built-ins users already know: ```text Default Auto-review Full Access Read Only locked-down web-enabled ``` Selecting `locked-down` keeps `active_permission_profile = Some("locked-down")`; selecting a built-in keeps the friendly label while switching to its named built-in profile. ## Screenshots Live `$test-tui` smoke screenshots uploaded through GitHub attachments: **Profile mode with built-ins and custom profiles** <img width="832" alt="Profile mode permissions picker with custom profiles" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/58b72431-418c-4839-9e39-575076db4c8f" /> **Legacy mode remains anonymous preset picker** <img width="1232" alt="Legacy permissions picker" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/95f413ab-4cee-411c-9afb-92580a885c97" /> <img width="1296" height="906" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ea381a78-9904-4aa2-828f-b7f2e43f60f2" /> <img width="705" height="207" alt="Screenshot 2026-05-18 at 2 58 00 PM" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/2fa6dd71-0296-449e-a6de-a72d78a1cb70" /> ## Validation - `git diff --cached --check` before commit. - Full test run skipped at the user request while pushing the split stack. |

tui: label compact rate-limit percentages (#24314)
## Summary The compact TUI status line already renders rate-limit percentages as remaining capacity, but the text did not say so. That made high-usage red indicators ambiguous because values like `weekly 6%` could be read as either used or remaining. This PR labels the compact rate-limit values explicitly as `left` across the status line, terminal title, and setup previews. Addresses #24274 |

Add SubagentStop hook (#22873)
# What <img width="1792" height="1024" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8f81d232-5813-4994-a61d-e42a05a93a3e" /> `SubagentStop` runs when a thread-spawned subagent turn is about to finish. Thread-spawned subagents use `SubagentStop` instead of the normal root-agent `Stop` hook. Configured handlers match on `agent_type`. Hook input includes the normal stop fields plus: - `agent_id`: the child thread id. - `agent_type`: the resolved subagent type. - `agent_transcript_path`: the child subagent transcript path. - `transcript_path`: the parent thread transcript path. - `last_assistant_message`: the final assistant message from the child turn, when available. - `stop_hook_active`: `true` when the child is already continuing because an earlier stop-like hook blocked completion. `SubagentStop` shares the same completion-control semantics as `Stop`, scoped to the child turn: - No decision allows the child turn to finish. - `decision: "block"` with a non-empty `reason` records that reason as hook feedback and continues the child with that prompt. - `continue: false` stops the child turn. If `stopReason` is present, Codex surfaces it as the stop reason. # Lifecycle Scope Only thread-spawned subagents run `SubagentStop`. Internal/system subagents such as Review, Compact, MemoryConsolidation, and Other do not run normal `Stop` hooks and do not run `SubagentStop`. This avoids exposing synthetic matcher labels for internal implementation paths. # Stack 1. #22782: add `SubagentStart`. 2. This PR: add `SubagentStop`. 3. #22882: add subagent identity to normal hook inputs. |

Add SubagentStart hook (#22782)
# What `SubagentStart` runs once when Codex creates a thread-spawned subagent, before that child sends its first model request. Thread-spawned subagents use `SubagentStart` instead of the normal root-agent `SessionStart` hook. Configured handlers match on the subagent `agent_type`, using the same value passed to `spawn_agent`. When no agent type is specified, Codex uses the default agent type. Hook input includes the normal session-start fields plus: - `agent_id`: the child thread id. - `agent_type`: the resolved subagent type. `SubagentStart` may return `hookSpecificOutput.additionalContext`. That context is added to the child conversation before the first model request. # Lifecycle Scope Only thread-spawned subagents run `SubagentStart`. Internal/system subagents such as Review, Compact, MemoryConsolidation, and Other do not run normal `SessionStart` hooks and do not run `SubagentStart`. This avoids exposing synthetic matcher labels for internal implementation paths. Also the `SessionStart` hook no longer fires for subagents, this matches behavior with other coding agents' implementation # Stack 1. This PR: add `SubagentStart`. 2. #22873: add `SubagentStop`. 3. #22882: add subagent identity to normal hook inputs. |

Harden CLI rate limit window labels (#22929)
## Context The CLI rate-limit surfaces previously described usage windows as fixed 5-hour and weekly limits. We want the CLI to display whatever supported rate-limit period the server returns instead of assuming a 5-hour/1-week pair. This supports generalized Codex rate-limit periods. ## Summary - Formats CLI rate-limit warning/status labels only for the supported returned window durations: approximate 5h, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual. - Uses generic fallback copy when a primary or secondary window has no duration, so missing secondary protection data does not produce stale weekly copy. - Uses generic fallback copy for unsupported window durations instead of adding arbitrary hourly, multi-day, multi-week, or multi-year labels. - Updates status line and terminal title setup descriptions/previews to talk about primary/secondary usage limits rather than fixed 5h/weekly limits. - Adds rendered insta snapshot coverage for the updated rate-limit status surfaces and `/status` fallback labels. ## Tests Tested locally: - one primary window - one secondary window - primary and secondary window |

Clarify resume hints for renamed threads (#23234)
Addresses #23181 ## Why Renamed threads can share names, so hints that suggest resuming directly by name are ambiguous. Issue #23181 asks for the picker hint to include the thread name and thread ID in parens so users can disambiguate safely. ## What - Adds a shared resume hint formatter for named threads: run `codex resume`, then select `<name> (<thread-id>)`. - Uses that hint for /rename confirmations, TUI session summaries, and CLI/TUI exit messages. - Keeps direct `codex resume <thread-id>` guidance for unnamed threads. ## Verification Manually verified that message after `/rename` and after `/exit` include session ID in parens. --------- Co-authored-by: Felipe Coury <felipe.coury@openai.com> |

goal: pause continuation loops on usage limits and blockers (#23094)
Addresses #22833, #22245, #23067 ## Why `/goal` can keep synthesizing turns even when the next turn cannot make meaningful progress. Hard usage exhaustion can replay failing turns, and repeated permission or external-resource blockers can keep burning tokens while waiting for user or system intervention. ## What changed - Add resumable `blocked` and `usageLimited` goal states. As with `paused`, goal continuation stops with these states. - Move to `usageLimited` after usage-limit failures. - Allow the built-in `update_goal` tool to set `blocked` only under explicit repeated-impasse guidance. Updated goal continuation prompt to specify that agent should use `blocked` only when it has made at least three attempts to get past an impasse. Most of the files touched by this PR are because of the small app server protocol update. ## Validation I manually reproduced a number of situations where an agent can run into a true impasse and verified that it properly enters `blocked` state. I then resumed and verified that it once again entered `blocked` state several turns later if the impasse still exists. I also manually reproduced the usage-limit condition by creating a simulated responses API endpoint that returns 429 errors with the appropriate error message. Verified that the goal runtime properly moves the goal into `usageLimited` state and TUI UI updates appropriately. Verified that `/goal resume` resumes (and immediately goes back into `ussageLImited` state if appropriate). ## Follow-up PRs Small changes will be needed to the GUI clients to properly handle the two new states. |

Prevent Esc from dismissing or rewinding /side (#22710)
Addresses #22599 ## Why `/side` currently lets `Esc` return to the parent thread. Multiple users reported that this collides with queued-steer UI that also advertises `Esc`, so a timing-sensitive keypress can dismiss an ephemeral side chat instead of sending the queued prompt. After removing that dismissal shortcut, the same `Esc` path could fall through to main-thread backtrack/edit-previous handling, which is not valid for ephemeral side conversations. This keeps `/side` out of both global `Esc` behaviors. ## What changed - Remove `Esc` from the `/side` return shortcut matcher while keeping the existing `Ctrl+C` and `Ctrl+D` behavior. - Update side-conversation hints and blocked-command copy to advertise `Ctrl+C` as the return shortcut. - Rename the reserved `Esc` keymap label to describe backtracking only. - Block backtrack/edit-previous handling while a side conversation is active and report `Editing previous prompts is unavailable in side conversations.` when that path would have fired. - Keep composer-owned `Esc` behavior, such as Vim insert-mode escape, routed locally. - Refresh focused shortcut assertions and TUI snapshots for the updated footer and new side-conversation error message. ## Verification Manually tested `/side` use cases and `Esc`, `Ctrl+C`, `Ctrl+D`. |

Simplify TUI startup test coverage (#22573)
## Why The TUI startup test surface had drifted into expensive, brittle coverage: - `tui/tests/suite/no_panic_on_startup.rs` was already ignored as flaky while still spawning a PTY to exercise malformed exec-policy rules. - `tui/tests/suite/model_availability_nux.rs` used a seeded session, cursor-query spoofing, and repeated interrupts to verify a narrow resume-path invariant. - `app/tests.rs` had started accumulating unrelated startup and summary coverage in one flat module even after the surrounding app code was split into feature modules. This keeps those behaviors covered while making the tests cheaper to understand and less likely to rot. It also preserves the malformed-rules regression from #8803 without requiring a terminal orchestration test. ## What changed - Replaced the malformed `rules` startup PTY case with a direct exec-policy loader regression: [`rules_path_file_returns_read_dir_error`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/21b6b5622f18b8cac0ea41fd083b3106778d9ffc/codex-rs/core/src/exec_policy_tests.rs#L264-L284) - Made the existing fresh-session-only startup tooltip behavior explicit with [`should_prepare_startup_tooltip_override`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/21b6b5622f18b8cac0ea41fd083b3106778d9ffc/codex-rs/tui/src/app/thread_routing.rs#L1272-L1279), then added focused coverage for the resume/fork gate and the persisted NUX counter. - Split startup and session-summary coverage out of `tui/src/app/tests.rs` into dedicated modules so the test layout better mirrors the current app architecture. - Converted one single-message goal validation snapshot into semantic assertions where layout was not the behavior under test. - Removed the two PTY-heavy suite files that the narrower tests now supersede. ## Verification - `cargo test -p codex-core rules_path_file_returns_read_dir_error` - `cargo test -p codex-tui startup_` - `cargo test -p codex-tui session_summary_` - `cargo test -p codex-tui goal_slash_command_rejects_oversized_objective` |

feat(cli): add codex doctor diagnostics (#22336)
## Why Users and support need a single command that captures the local Codex runtime, configuration, auth, terminal, network, and state shape without asking the user to know which diagnostic depth to choose first. `codex doctor` now runs the useful checks by default and makes the detailed human output the default because the command is usually run when someone already needs context. The command also targets concrete support failure modes we have seen while iterating on the design: - update-target mismatches like #21956, where the installed package manager target can differ from the running executable - terminal and multiplexer issues that depend on `TERM`, tmux/zellij state, color handling, and TTY metadata - provider-specific HTTP/WebSocket connectivity, including ChatGPT WebSocket handshakes and API-key/provider endpoint reachability - local state/log SQLite integrity problems and large rollout directories - feedback reports that need an attached, redacted diagnostic snapshot without asking the user to run a second command ## What Changed - Adds `codex doctor` as a grouped CLI diagnostic report with default detailed output and `--summary` for the compact view. - Adds stable report sections for Environment, Configuration, Updates, Connectivity, and Background Server, plus a top Notes block that promotes anomalies such as available updates, large rollout directories, optional MCP issues, and mixed auth signals. - Adds runtime provenance, install consistency, bundled/system search readiness, terminal/multiplexer metadata, `config.toml` parse status, auth mode details, sandbox details, feature flag summaries, update cache/latest-version state, app-server daemon state, SQLite integrity checks, rollout statistics, and provider-aware network diagnostics. - Adds ChatGPT WebSocket diagnostics that report the negotiated HTTP upgrade as `HTTP 101 Switching Protocols` and include timeout, DNS, auth, and provider context in detailed output. - Makes reachability provider-aware: API-key OpenAI setups check the API endpoint, ChatGPT auth checks the ChatGPT path, and custom/AWS/local providers check configured HTTP endpoints when available. - Adds structured, redacted JSON output where `checks` is keyed by check id and `details` is a key/value object for support tooling. - Integrates doctor with feedback uploads by attaching a best-effort `codex-doctor-report.json` report and adding derived Sentry tags for overall status and failing/warning checks. - Updates the TUI feedback consent copy so users can see that the doctor report is included when logs/diagnostics are uploaded. - Updates the CLI bug issue template to ask reporters for `codex doctor --json` and render pasted reports as JSON. ## Example Output The examples below are sanitized from local smoke runs with `--no-color` so the structure is reviewable in plain text. ### `codex doctor` ```text Codex Doctor v0.0.0 · macos-aarch64 Notes ↑ updates 0.130.0 available (current 0.0.0, dismissed 0.128.0) ⚠ rollouts 1,526 active files · 2.53 GB on disk ⚠ mcp MCP configuration has optional issues ⚠ auth mixed auth signals: ChatGPT login plus API key env var; feat(tui): standardize picker navigation keys (#22347)
## Why Picker-style UI in the TUI has accumulated a mix of hardcoded navigation keys. Some lists supported page movement, some did not; some accepted Vim-like keys, while others only accepted arrows; and tabbed or horizontally adjustable pickers had no shared keymap action for left/right movement. This PR makes picker/list navigation consistent and configurable so users can rely on the same defaults across the TUI. ## What Changed - Adds shared list keymap actions for: - vertical movement: `move_up`, `move_down` - horizontal movement: `move_left`, `move_right` - paging and jumps: `page_up`, `page_down`, `jump_top`, `jump_bottom` - Adds defaults: - Up/down: arrows, `Ctrl+P/N`, `Ctrl+K/J`, and plain `k/j` where text input is not active - Page up/down: `PageUp/PageDown` and `Ctrl+B/F` - First/last: `Home/End` - Left/right: `Left/Right` and `Ctrl+H/L` - Wires the shared list keymap through picker and list surfaces including session resume, multi-select, tabbed selection lists, settings-style lists, app-link selection, MCP elicitation, request-user-input, and the OSS selection wizard. - Keeps search behavior intact by reserving printable characters for query text in searchable pickers. - Updates keymap setup actions, config schema, snapshots, and focused coverage for the new list actions. ## How to Test 1. Start Codex from this branch and open the session picker, for example with an existing session history. 2. In the session list, verify that `Ctrl+J/K` moves the selection down/up. 3. Verify that `Ctrl+F/B` pages down/up and `Home/End` jumps to the first/last visible session. 4. Type printable search text such as `j` or `k` and confirm it updates the query instead of navigating. 5. Focus a picker control that changes values horizontally, such as a session picker toolbar control, and verify `Ctrl+H/L` changes the focused value like left/right arrows. Targeted tests run: - `cargo test -p codex-tui keymap::tests::` - `cargo test -p codex-tui keymap_setup::tests::` - `cargo test -p codex-tui horizontal_list_keys` - `cargo test -p codex-tui page_and_jump_navigation_use_list_keymap` - `cargo test -p codex-tui ctrl_h_l_move_provider_selection` - `cargo test -p codex-tui scroll_state::tests` - `cargo test -p codex-tui switching_tabs_changes_visible_items_and_clears_search` - `cargo test -p codex-tui toggle_sort_key_reloads_with_new_sort` Also ran `just write-config-schema`, `just fmt`, `just fix -p codex-tui`, `just argument-comment-lint`, and `git diff --check`. Note: `cargo test -p codex-tui` was attempted and still aborts in the pre-existing `tests::fork_last_filters_latest_session_by_cwd_unless_show_all` stack overflow, which is unrelated to this branch. |

feat(tui): add ambient terminal pets (#21206)
## Why The Codex App has animated pets, but the TUI had no equivalent ambient companion surface. This brings that experience into terminal Codex while keeping the main chat flow usable: the pet should feel present, but it cannot cover transcript text, composer input, approvals, or picker content. The feature also needs to be terminal-aware. Different terminals support different image protocols, tmux can interfere with image rendering, and some users will want pets disabled entirely or anchored differently depending on their layout. <table> <tr><td> <img width="4110" height="2584" alt="CleanShot 2026-05-05 at 12 41 45@2x" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/68a1fcbc-2104-48d6-b834-69c6aaa95cdf" /> <p align="center">macOS - Ghostty, iTerm2 and WezTerm with Custom Pet</p> </td></tr> <tr><td> ![Uploading CleanShot 2026-05-10 at 20.28.30.png…]() <p align="center">Windows Terminal</p> </td></tr> <tr><td> <img width="3902" height="2752" alt="CleanShot 2026-05-05 at 12 39 02@2x" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/300e2931-6b00-467e-91cb-ab8e28470500" /> <p align="center">Linux - WezTerm and Ghostty</p> </td></tr> </table> ## What Changed - Add a TUI ambient pet renderer in `codex-rs/tui/src/pets/`. - Port the app-style pet animation states so the sprite changes with task status, waiting-for-input states, review/ready states, and failures. - Add `/pets` selection UI with a preview pane, loading state, built-in pet choices, and a first-row `Disable terminal pets` option. - Download built-in pet spritesheets on demand from the same public CDN path already used by Android, under `https://persistent.oaistatic.com/codex/pets/v1/...`, and cache them locally under `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`. - Keep custom pets local. - Add config support for pet selection, disabling pets, and choosing whether the pet follows the composer bottom or anchors to the terminal bottom. - Reserve layout space around the pet so transcript wrapping, live responses, and composer input do not render underneath the sprite. - Gate image rendering by terminal capability, disable image pets under tmux, and support both Kitty Graphics and SIXEL terminals. - Add redraw cleanup for terminal image artifacts, including sixel cell clearing. ## Current Scope - This is an initial TUI version of ambient pets, not full App parity. - It focuses on ambient sprite rendering, `/pets` selection, custom pets, terminal capability gating, and on-demand CDN-backed built-in assets. - The ambient text overlay is currently disabled, so the TUI renders the pet sprite without extra status text beside it. ## How to Test 1. Start Codex TUI in a terminal with image support. 2. Run `/pets`. 3. Confirm the picker shows built-in pets plus custom pets, and the first item is `Disable terminal pets`. 4. On a fresh `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`, move onto a built-in pet and confirm the first preview downloads the spritesheet from the shared Codex pets CDN and renders successfully. 5. Move through the pet list and confirm subsequent built-in previews use the local cache. 6. Select a pet, then send and receive messages. Confirm transcript and composer text wrap before the pet instead of rendering underneath the sprite. 7. Change the pet anchor setting and confirm the pet can either follow the composer bottom or sit at the terminal bottom. 8. Return to `/pets`, choose `Disable terminal pets`, and confirm the sprite disappears cleanly. Targeted tests: - `cargo test -p codex-tui ambient_pet_` - `cargo test -p codex-tui resize_reflow_wraps_transcript_early_when_pet_is_enabled` - `cargo insta pending-snapshots` |

Unified mentions in TUI (#19068)
This PR replaces the TUI’s file-only `@mention` popup with a unified mentions experience. Typing `@...` now searches across filesystem matches, installed plugins, and skills in one popup, with result types clearly labeled and selectable from the same flow. - Adds a unified `@mentions` popup that returns: - plugins - skills - files - directories - Adds search modes so users can narrow the popup without changing their query: - All Results _(default/same as Codex App)_ - Filesystem Only - Plugins _(...and skills)_ - Preserves existing insertion behavior: - selected file paths are inserted into the prompt - paths with spaces are quoted - image file selections still attach as images when possible - selecting a plugin or skill inserts the corresponding `$name` - the composer records the canonical mention binding, such as `plugin://...` or the skill path - Expanded `@mentions` rendering: - type tags for Plugin, Skill, File, and Dir - distinct plugin/filesystem colors - stable fixed-height layout (8 rows) - truncation behavior for narrow terminals Note: - The unified mentions popup does not display app connectors under `@mention` results for Codex App parity. Connector mentions remain available through the existing `$mention` path. https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f93781ed-57d3-4cb5-9972-675bc5f3ef3f |

Fix goal update and add /goal edit command in TUI (#21954)
## Why Users have requested the ability to edit a goal's objective after a goal has been created. This PR exposes a new `/goal edit` command in the TUI to address this request. In the process of implementing this, I also noticed an existing bug in the goal runtime. When a goal's objective is updated through the `thread/goal/set` app server API, the goal runtime didn't emit a new steering prompt to tell the agent about the new objective. This PR also fixes this hole. ## What Changed - Adds `/goal edit` in the TUI, opening an edit box prefilled with the current goal objective. - Keeps active and paused goals in their current state, resets completed goals to active, keeps budget-limited goals budget-limited, and preserves the existing token budget. - Changes the existing `thread/goal/set` behavior so editing an objective preserves goal accounting instead of resetting it. The older reset-on-new-objective behavior was left over from before `thread/goal/clear`; clients that need to reset accounting can now clear the existing goal and create a new one. - Reuses the existing goal set API path; this does not add or change app-server protocol surface area. - Adds a dedicated goal runtime steering prompt when an externally persisted goal mutation changes the objective, so active turns receive the updated objective. ## Validation - Make sure `/goal edit` returns an error if no goal currently exists - Make sure `/goal edit` displays an edit box that can be optionally canceled with no side effects - Make sure that an edited goal results in a steer so the agent starts pursuing the new objective - Make sure the new objective is reflected in the goal if you use `/goal` to display the goal summary - Make sure that `/goal edit` doesn't reset the token budget, time/token accounting on the updated goal |

fix(tui): preserve wrapped prose beside URLs (#21760)
## Why Mixed prose lines that contained URLs started taking the URL-preserving wrapping path, but that path could split ordinary words mid-token. A follow-up issue remained in scrollback insertion: when already-rendered indented rows were wrapped again, continuation rows could lose their margin and fall back to terminal hard wrapping. Together those bugs made normal Markdown output look broken around links, lists, blockquotes, and indented content. Separately, the local argument-comment lint wrappers failed under environments that set `PYTHONSAFEPATH=1`, because Python no longer adds the script directory to `sys.path` automatically. That prevented the lint from reaching Rust callsites at all. <img width="1778" height="1558" alt="CleanShot 2026-05-09 at 11 51 38" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9274d150-1757-4f1a-89ac-5bdc9997d8cb" /> ## What Changed - Preserve URL tokens without turning every neighboring prose word into a character-level split point. - Add a mixed URL/prose wrapper that keeps ordinary words whole, preserves leading whitespace, and re-splits long non-URL tokens against the actual width available on continuation rows. - Reuse a rendered history row's leading whitespace as the continuation indent when scrollback insertion has to pre-wrap it again. - Add regression coverage for markdown wrapping, history-cell rendering, scrollback continuation margins, leading-indent width accounting, and continuation-row re-splitting. - Make both argument-comment lint entrypoints explicitly add their own directory to `sys.path`, so sibling imports still work when `PYTHONSAFEPATH=1`. ## How to Test 1. Start Codex and render a long Markdown response that mixes prose with inline links, blockquotes, lists, and indented code-like text. 2. Confirm that ordinary words next to links stay whole instead of breaking mid-word. 3. Resize or replay the transcript and confirm wrapped continuation rows keep their expected left margin for blockquotes, lists, and indented content. 4. Run the source argument-comment lint from a shell with `PYTHONSAFEPATH=1` and confirm it starts normally instead of failing to import `wrapper_common`. Targeted tests: - `cargo test -p codex-tui mixed_line --lib` - `cargo test -p codex-tui preserves_prefix_on_wrapped_rows --lib` - `cargo test -p codex-tui agent_markdown_cell_does_not_split_words_after_inline_markdown --lib` - `cargo test -p codex-tui mixed_url_markdown_wraps_prose_without_splitting_words_snapshot --lib` - `python3 tools/argument-comment-lint/test_wrapper_common.py` - `just argument-comment-lint-from-source -p codex-tui -- --lib` Notes: - `cargo test -p codex-tui` currently reaches the new tests successfully, then still aborts in the pre-existing `tests::fork_last_filters_latest_session_by_cwd_unless_show_all` stack-overflow failure. |

Show permissions and approval mode in the TUI status line (#21677)
Fixes #21665. ## Why The TUI status line is the right place for compact, glanceable session state. The original request was motivated by the need to see the active permission posture without opening `/permissions` or `/status`, especially when switching between safer and more permissive modes during a session. This PR intentionally separates `permissions` from `approval-mode` instead of combining them into one status-line item. They answer related but different questions: `permissions` describes the active sandbox/profile shape, while `approval-mode` describes how command approvals are handled. Keeping them separate makes each item independently configurable and avoids long combined labels in an already space-constrained status line. The tradeoff is that users who want the full permission posture in the status line need to opt into both items. In exchange, users can show only the sandbox/profile label, only the approval behavior, or both, and named user-defined profiles remain concise. Non-standard permission shapes are rendered as `Custom permissions` rather than trying to squeeze detailed profile contents into the status line; `/status` remains the fuller explanatory surface. ## What changed - Added a configurable `permissions` status-line item. - Added a separate `approval-mode` status-line item, with `approval` as an alias. - Render standard permission states compactly as `Read Only`, `Workspace`, or `Full Access`. - Preserve user-defined permission profile names directly in the status line. - Render unnamed non-standard permission shapes as `Custom permissions`. - Refresh status surfaces when `/permissions` updates the permission profile, approval policy, or approval reviewer. - Updated status-line preview snapshot coverage for the new items. ## Verification - `cargo test -p codex-tui status_permissions_non_default_workspace_write_uses_workspace_label` - `cargo test -p codex-tui permissions_selection_emits_history_cell_when_selection_changes` - `cargo insta pending-snapshots --manifest-path tui/Cargo.toml` |

Show plugin hooks in plugin details (#21447)
Supersedes the abandoned #19859, rebuilt on latest `main`. # Why PR #19705 adds discovery for hooks bundled with plugins, but `/plugins` still only shows skills, apps, and MCP servers. This follow-up makes bundled hooks visible in the same plugin detail view so users can inspect the full plugin surface in one place. We also need `PluginHookSummary` to populate Plugin Hooks in the app; `hooks/list` is not enough there because plugin detail needs to show hooks for disabled plugins too. # What - extend `plugin/read` with `PluginHookSummary` entries for bundled hooks - summarize plugin hooks while loading plugin details - render a `Hooks` row in the `/plugins` detail popup <img width="3456" height="848" alt="CleanShot 2026-04-27 at 11 45 34@2x" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/fe3a38d6-a260-4351-8513-fb04c93d725b" /> |
