Backport #49339 onto `release/0.159` for 0.159.1. This adds GPT-6.1 Sol to the Bedrock Mantle and Runtime catalogs and makes it the default while retaining existing models and provider capability normalization. The bundled catalog dependency is already on the release branch through #49323. The cherry-pick applied without conflicts and has the same stable patch ID as the original public commit. Validation: - `just test -p codex-model-provider -p codex-model-provider-info --lib bedrock`: 57 passed. - `just test -p codex-tui --lib bedrock`: 7 passed; reviewed Mantle and Runtime model-picker snapshots, including GovCloud coverage. - `just test -p codex-app-server --test all -E 'test(suite::v2::thread_start::thread_start_provider_model_fallback_) or test(suite::v2::thread_start::thread_start_bedrock_runtime_)'`: 4 passed on automatic retry. All four initial attempts timed out during initialization; nextest reports these as flaky passes. - `just fmt` completed successfully. Discarded unrelated justfile-only formatting churn; the backport remains identical to the public source patch. - `git diff --check`: passed. - Live AWS inference has not been verified as part of this backport. CI remains blocked by failures outside this nine-file backport: - [Manifest check](https://github.com/openai/codex/actions/runs/36615506389/job/109567359534): stale `code-mode` feature exception. - [Codespell](https://github.com/openai/codex/actions/runs/36615506389/job/109567359001): `WRONLY` and `oint` in unchanged exec-server/TUI math files. - [cargo shear](https://github.com/openai/codex/actions/runs/36615506389/job/109567775485): unlinked `core/tests/suite/scenarios_read_only_mcp.rs` and `login/src/internal_identity.rs`. - [Bazel Clippy](https://github.com/openai/codex/actions/runs/36615506389/job/109567360047): unused imports in unchanged core implementation/test files. - [SDK checks](https://github.com/openai/codex/actions/runs/36615506389/job/109567359667): existing formatter-driver test expects direct rustfmt while the driver uses cargo fmt; neither file changes here. Release coordination: include this backport together with #49323 before publishing 0.159.1. Publication remains with the release captain.
Codex CLI is a coding agent from OpenAI that runs locally on your computer.
If you want Codex in your code editor (VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf), install in your IDE.
If you want the desktop app experience, run
codex app or visit the Codex App page.
If you are looking for the cloud-based agent from OpenAI, Codex Web, go to chatgpt.com/codex.
Quickstart
Installing and running Codex CLI
Run the following on Mac or Linux to install Codex CLI:
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh
Run the following on Windows to install Codex CLI:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1 | iex"
The standalone installers download from https://releases.openai.com/codex by default and fall back to GitHub Releases if a metadata or asset download is unavailable. To force GitHub Releases, set CODEX_INSTALLER_USE_RELEASES_OPENAI_COM to false (0 and no are also accepted):
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | CODEX_INSTALLER_USE_RELEASES_OPENAI_COM=false sh
$env:CODEX_INSTALLER_USE_RELEASES_OPENAI_COM='false'; irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1 | iex
Codex CLI can also be installed via the following package managers:
# Install using npm
npm install -g @openai/codex
# Install using Homebrew
brew install --cask codex
Then simply run codex to get started.
You can also go to the latest GitHub Release and download the appropriate binary for your platform.
Each GitHub Release contains many executables, but in practice, you likely want one of these:
- macOS
- Apple Silicon/arm64:
codex-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz - x86_64 (older Mac hardware):
codex-x86_64-apple-darwin.tar.gz
- Apple Silicon/arm64:
- Linux
- x86_64:
codex-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz - arm64:
codex-aarch64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz
- x86_64:
Each archive contains a single entry with the platform baked into the name (e.g., codex-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl), so you likely want to rename it to codex after extracting it.
